berry crisp

You’ve seen the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, right?

And no, I’m not talking about the version staring Johnny Depp because that was BAWLS awful. Seriously, Tim Burton? Why did you have to go and mess with my childhood memories? I don’t care about Mr. Wonka’s childhood issues. I was completely content not knowing how his Dad was a control freak dentist and wouldn’t let him have candy. All I cared about is whether or not fizzy lifting drink would actually work or not.

Plus, you can’t redo a Gene Wilder film, ever. He is the most epic actor of all time! Young Frankenstein anyone? I remember as a kid watching that movie when I didn’t feel well. My Mom would make my brothers and I homemade chicken noodle soup and let us watch the movie because it made us giggle. I still watch it today when I don’t feel well!

Okay, the reason I bring up this classic movie is to talk about a specific famous scene. You probably know which one I’m referring to. We all remember Veruca Salt. How could we forget? Supper snobby, Daddy’s girl that wanted a golden goose – a parent’s worst nightmare if you ask me.

Anyways, one of my favorite scenes is when Mr. Wonka brings them inside and the kids notice the yellow-striped wallpaper with fruit stencils.  Mr. Wonka says,Try some more. The strawberries taste like strawberries, and the snozzberries taste like snozzberries. Vercua Salt replies, “Snozzberries? Who ever heard of a snozzberry?” I remember wanting to smack Veruca upside the head. You’re complaining about licking edible wallpaper! Shut up and like it, ya crazy!

As I replay that scene in my mind, and imagine myself in said scene, I think I would skip smacking Vercua Salt upside the head and instead give her a big ol’ wedgie for being bonkers. COME on! You know it would be funny. And then as a way to say thank you to Mr. Wonka for letting me lick the crazy snozzeberry wallpaper, I would bring him this berry crisp.
I’d think he would be down for a big bowl full of sweet berries topped with a golden sugar crust, don’t you? Besides tasting awesome it would totally coordinate with his jacket. If that alone doesn’t get me a couple bottles of fizzy lifting drink, I don’t know what will.
This berry crisp may not be made in a magical chocolate factory, but it’s full of magical surprises.
