Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spray a small baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tbsp butter. Next, add in the diced onions and cook for a few minutes. Add in the kosher salt, ground pepper, granulated sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Stir and cook for another couple of minutes. Add in the beef broth and continue to cook until the sauce has thickened and liquid has evaporated.
Using a slotted spoon, transfer the onions to a bowl and set aside. In the same skillet as the onions, add the ground beef. Cook the ground beef until no longer pink, about 5 to 7 minutes, strain the beef if needed.
Pour the beef mixture in a large mixing bowl. Once slightly cooled, add the mayo and toss followed by the onion mixture.
Place the bottom of the slider buns on the prepared sheet pan. Spread the hamburger mixture evenly over the bottom buns. Top the ground beef with sliced cheese followed by top buns. Next, the remaining 3 tbsp butter in a microwave safe bowl for about a minute or until melted. Stir in garlic powder and onion powder. Brush the tops of the slider buns with the melted butter.
Bake the sliders for about 10 to 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden. Remove from the oven and enjoy!
