old school spring cleaning
I love spring cleaning.
Probably a little too much.
Do you remember the episode from Full House where Danny Tanner makes the whole family partake in spring cleaning? I remember watching that episode and thinking how fun it would be to help them clean their house. Oooohh….oooh…give me that mop, purrrrty please?
Clearly I was not a normal child.
I used to dump over flower pots just so I could sweep up the dirt. Weird? You betcha.
I also used to run around wearing a yellow polka-dot bathing suit and sported an 80’s mullet. Mom, how did I survive childhood?
Okay, where was I?
Ah, yes . . . spring cleaning.
Today I want to share a few quick tips on spring cleaning the old school way, using simple products already found in your cupboards and drawers. Now, I can’t take any of the credit for these brilliant ideas. We found a couple of typed lists among Granny’s things while we were back in Wichita for her funeral. The lists ranged from how-to cooking techniques to cures for infections to ways to ward off bugs. Granny was an amazing woman (and legit spring clean-er) and I thought it would be fun to share some of her ideas:
Here we go…
Baking Soda
– Eliminate water rings on finished wood with a paste of baking soda and toothpaste. Dip a soft cloth into the paste, then rub away the stain.
Aluminum Foil
Dryer Sheets
– Dryer sheets can dissolve soap scum from shower door and walls – who knew?! Just clean wet surfaces with a sheet or two.
Milk
Alka-Seltzer
– To clean a toilet, drop two tablets in the bowl. Wait 20 minutes. Become hypnotized by the tiny bubbles of freshness. Scrub, then flush.
Not too shabby, huh?
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to sharpen my kitchen scissors and plop some alka-seltzer in the toilet. Life is good.
Got any old school spring cleaning tips to share?
I used to clean house and wash cars for fun! We are so not weird!!!!
Amy Jo – You've made me a happy girl! High FIVE friend!
Okay, you win majorly for these tips (even though the one about the scissors-sharpening was hysterical). And the milk one will be a life-saver. Period.
I love those tips! I always wonder how to sharpen scissors…problem solved! Thanks!!
I wish I could get motivated to Spring clean! My favorite cleaner is white vinegar. I use it in the wash as a fabric softener and also mix it with water and a few drops of dish soap for an all purpose cleaner. It disinfects and the smell goes away after it dries.
You can also use dryer sheets to clean non-stick pans! Just soak one in your yucky pan with some water for a few minutes and it desolves whatever is stuck. Genius!
Ummm… this deserves to be on Pinterest. 🙂 Great tips!
