a doctorate in the house
In the past two weeks, Mr. B and I have experienced just about every type of climate. Mountain snowfall? Check. Windy plains? Check. More Snow? Double Check. Next up? Sunny Desert!
Crazy? Yep.
Typical? Probably not.
Glad to be home? You betcha.
Even though we are still battling chest colds and haven’t slept a solid week in our own bed in I can’t tell you how long, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else in the world this weekend.
My immediate family (besides Kitty who is 31 weeks pregnant!) all gathered in sunny Phoenix to watch my father receive his doctorate diploma in Health and Sciences from A.T. Still University.
For those of you that don’t know, A.T. Still was founded in 1892 in Kirksville, Missouri. It was the first Osteopathic School of Medicine, but as the health care profession grew and more specialists were needed, and so did the university. There are no undergraduate courses at the university just post graduate / post professional masters or doctorates.
Anyways, my Dad’s program took him three years to complete, and most of it was completed online through black board discussions and video chats. He actually gave his dissertation online! Crazy, right?
The graduation ceremony was held outside on campus in Mesa about 20 minutes east of downtown Phoenix. The weather was p-e-r-f-e-c-t. Seventy and sunny with a cool breeze. All that was missing was a swimming pool and pinacoldas.
I was very impressed with whole setup, especially as a blogger, because I had great access to the stage to take pictures and with it being outside, hello natural lighting!
The ceremony started in typical fashion with the prelude and processional.
Hi Dad!
All of the speakers were fantastic – great humor and accents! My favorite was the keynote speaker from Puerto Rico.
After the keynote, it was time to move that tassel from one side to the other. In case you were wondering, some of the other disciplines were – physical therapy, audiology and human movement.
The Health Sciences group went second to last.
To the stage!
Last, but not least….Dad!
Nice cape!
The ceremony concluded, and then it was family picture time!
We couldn’t have been more proud of my Dad. Once again he has proved to all of us that hard work, discipline and true passion can take you anywhere in this world.
Congrats Dad! Or should I say, Dr. Wurth.
Yes you have to be very proud of your dad!.
Congratulations!
Besides, at certain age, memory starts to fade away, laffin (I´m telling you from what I´m experience with me learning French now), so your dad has the merit!.
Love from Spain

What a crazy weekend! Not so much the ceremony and celebrations. . .but the month of February leading up to the weekend!
But what is important is that we all made it to Phoenix to be with Paul despite: an important job phone/interview coming at any time, colds in both Mr. B. and Lauren, missing their plane to Phoenix (John and Moomers) and having to fly to Cleveland, then to Phoenix, Jordan getting a new car after his completely broke, 3 funerals (Granny, Stella, Walt), working, working (Mr. B., Lauren, John at Hallmark, Geri up until 10 PM the night before at Ju Ju), Geri dropping and breaking her phone 2 days before Phoenix, Jordan just getting back from Indianapolis where he picked up a new car, and John having to leave Kitty in KC because she was 7 months pregnant.
Did I leave something out? Sheesh.
But we love Paul, so we wanted to be with him.
Thank you taking such good pictures.
Love, Moomers
Go Dr. Wurth!! Great pictures and so glad everyone was there to share!
Lauren:
What a nice tribute to the weekend's celebration. I'll never forget the feeling I had walking across that stage. Having you all with me that day and for all your support leading up to graduation, I will always be grateful. Thanks for helping with the PPT projects – we always aced them!
Love always,
Dr. Dad
Congratulations to your father – that is a major accomplishment and it's wonderful that you were able to be there to celebrate with him!
Slash, I totally agree about the natural lighting situation – when it's good, I lap it up!
