American Lamb Stromboli

When it comes to creating dishes that bring people together, few can match the charm of stromboli. This Italian-American classic, filled with layers of savory ingredients and baked to golden perfection, is the ultimate comfort food. But what if we elevated it?

Enter lamb stromboli—a delightful twist on the traditional recipe that combines the warmth of a family favorite with the sophistication of tender, spiced lamb.

Why Use American Lamb?

I used American Lamb in this stromboli. Their lean, nutrient-rich ground lamb is ideal for making a lot of dishes, but they are truly magnificent when used in this fan-favorite dish. Aside from the fact that lamb is one of the most delicious types of protein out there, American lamb is also packed with an array of essential nutrients.

Lamb is a versatile and rich protein that adds depth and flavor to any recipe. I have quite the catalog of recipes that you might want to take a look at trying: Lamb Lasagna Crostini, Skillet Huevos Rancheros with Ground Lamb, and Ground Lamb Vegetable Frittata.

How to Make American Lamb Stromboli

Not only is this stromboli incredibly delicious but is also embarrassingly easy to make! Follow the steps below to ensure cooking success:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large skillet preheated to medium-high heat add the olive oil, onion, pepper, kosher salt and pepper. Saute the veggies until softened for about five minutes. Next, add in the ground lamb. Cook the lamb until it is no longer pink for about six minutes.
  • Add in the garlic and spices. Stir to combine and continue to cook for about a minute. Pour in the marinara sauce, stir, and let simmer for about five minutes. Remove from the heat.
  • Roll the pizza dough out into a 9X13 rectangle. Next, leaving a 2-1/2 inch border on the long sides and ¼-inch border on the short sides, cut the dough at 1-inch intervals along each long side. Fill the middle of the dough with the lamb sauce and top with shredded mozzarella.
  • Alternating sides, fold the strips halfway over the filling at an angle, creating a braided look. Make sure to pinch the short sides of the dough to keep the filling from spilling out. Brush the top of the stromboli with egg. Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and garnish with parmesan cheese. Let cool slightly before serving!

Few Tips for Success

  • USDA recommends that ground lamb be cooked to a safe internal temperature of 160 degrees. Use a food thermometer to make sure that you are cooking the meat right.
  • To have perfectly browned ground meat, make sure that it is at room temperature before cooking. You also have to break them down into pieces in the pan on an even layer. Let the meat cook undisturbed for a few minutes until the edges turn crisp and golden before stirring.
