chicken andouille brats with avocados and japlapenos {a.k.a. the t.j.}
Back in the ol’ college days, after a Saturday night of pure shenanigans, my roommates and I would lounge on our “Rent-to-Own” couches and watch marathon episodes of The O.C., and, well, Mean Girls, too.
We nursed our hangovers with spicy chicken sandwiches from Wendy’s and would attempt to sing the catchy intro song before each episode began.
Do you remember that song? “We’ve been on the run, Driving in the sun, Looking out for #1…..Californiaaaaaaaaaaa, here we come!”
I remember having a huge crush on Seth, played by Adam Brody. He was the dorky, funny, comic book loving character. I was always super-jealous of Rachel Bilson (Summer), who played his girlfriend on the show. I loved the scene where he hangs upside down like Superman and they kiss. So major. Oh, I almost forgot! Do you remember Marissa Cooper, played by Mischa Barton? Dude, what happened to her? Has she starred in anything lately?
Since Seth, Summer, and Marissa lived in the O.C., they were a hop, skip, and a jump from Tijuana, Mexico. Or, as they called it, “T.J.” Well, you can imagine when the group ventured down to “T.J.” drama hit the fan. Does anything good ever happen when you’re 17 and partying south of the border? I think not.
So, in honor of the drama and spicy past, I thought it would be fun to create a recipe that my almost thirty something self could eat. Even though my Saturday nights no longer consist of taking purple hooter shots, I still continue the ritual of eating spicy foods on Sundays. Thus, The T.J. was born.
This brat is not for the faint of heart. In fact, I’m issuing a warning: if consumed, possible fire-breathing will occur after consumption. But! If you are willing to tango with this spicy devil, the brat is actually quite tasty. Who doesn’t love jalapenos, avocados, and andouille chicken sausage? I rest my case.
Alright, could someone hit play?
Chicken Andouille Brats with Avocados and Jalapenos
Ingredients:
1 packaged chicken andouille brats (pre-cooked… usually find by the bacon section in the grocery store)
4 whole wheat brat buns
2 large jalapenos, sliced into rounds
2 large avocados, chopped
Yellow Mustard
Pico de Gallo
Directions:
Preheat a inside grill pan to medium high-heat. Cook brats according to package directions. Probably about 8 to 10 minutes. Take off the grill. Place brat inside bun. Top with yellow mustard, pico de gallo, three jalapeno rounds per each brat, and avocado. I highly recommend drinking it with a beer to cool down your mouth!!
Seriously, that’s like my favorite song IN LIFE. I’m not even kidding. I’m gonna listen now. UGH.
Also, give me these dawgs right now.
Phew! I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks this song is epic! I’ll send the dawgs over in 5.
I am so not afraid of a little fire-breathing. When we lived in LA we would jump the border quite often, going 30 miles south to get fresh fish tacos TO DIE FOR. Kinda like Mischa. What ever happened to her anyway???
I’m glad someone else enjoys a little fire-breathing from time to time! I think Mischa may have fallen deep into the giggle juice. I haven’t seen her in anything!
OMG I used to love the OC!!!!! And that song!! Love this.
The OC was the best! What could be better than ocean drama?! Ha!
Love all that heat.
Phew. So glad someone can appreciate a spicy dawg. Sometimes you need to spice it up!
Oh, how I love everything about this dawg – the colors, the flavors, the textures, those lovely layers of heat. It’s my favorite kind of meal. I need a stack of those cute papers, too. They could cut my dish washing to a minimum. Love them!
Thanks, Jeanne! You can find the papers at World Market. I’m slightly obsessed!
I’m coming over so we can binge on The OC and eat these brats and crush on Seth together.
Yes and yes! See you in 5? 🙂
I love chicken sausage….I’m sure I’d love these. Love the toppings too!
Can I bring some over and sit on your beautiful deck and sip cold beer? Or wine? 🙂
OMGGGG. Gurl. We need to have an O.C. marathon. Fo shizzle. I was OBSESSED with that show. And my brother was too (which was kind of odd and he’ll probably never admit it – he bought every seasons’ dvd set hahahaha) and we spent hours in his room or my room watching it. Gahhh i love dramas. We could eat these brats while we watched the drama-fest happen.
Oh, btw, I hated Summer because of her bitchy ways but then I wanted to be just like her. Oh my days..
YESSSSS! We totally need to have an OC marathon, fo’ sure! And yes, the brats must be actioned!
P.S. Ditto on Summer. She was always complaining!
I never watched the O.C. I think I missed out! Too many boys at my house but I’m telling you they would be all over these dogs!
Yes! You’re boys would love these dawgs! Because what boy wouldn’t want the possibility of breathing fire. 🙂
I’d be willing to engage in a little fire-breathing to be able to snack on brat. My husband went to UCLA, and he and his friends would occasionally head south of the border for some college fun. You’re right…nothing good ever comes of that!
Yes! I’m glad someone else enjoys a little fire-breathing action. These brats won’t disappoint!
I miss the O.C. SOOOO much. now that song is stuck in my head. Not such a bad thing!!! These look amazing and I need to sink my teeth into one right now!
Purple hooter shots?? Okay, I’m not going to ask. 🙂 Sausage on a roll with all the spicy and savory toppings in the land is one of the best things.
I looooove this! My husband & I havent stopped talking about it since your Instagram pic yesterday!! haha I cant wait for a little fire breathing!!
Oh & Im fully obsessed with the oc. I own all the seasons. Ive watched them more times than I care to admit, & I too, was totally jealous of Summer Roberts. & Marissa Cooper. OH & the intro song, the best part. I still dream about what it would be like to live in their mcmansions. 😛 haha
Thanks for the blast from the past!
Your college days sound like an exact replica of mine 🙂 ‘Cept I had a crush on the bad boy in all his badness. Your dogs look like fully loaded joy! Love the T.J. inspired meal!
