I’m a self-proclaimed non-baker.

The whole science behind baking is way over my pay grade and honestly, I’d rather leave it to the experts like my mother.

She is an extraordinary baker. Her Christmas Sugar Cookies are legendary as well as her Chocolate Pumpkin Muffins and let’s not forget about the Banana Cake. I’ve tried over the years to get into baking and my love for cooking lies in spices and clarified butter.

However, if I am going to bake, I will always make a banana cake. In fact, I make this traditional cake every year for friends and family birthdays, and it’s always a hit. Keeping to what I’m good at, I’ve taken that banana cake and kicked it up a notch by corralling in chocolate chips. Yes, it’s a simple addition, but I”m telling you, it hits all the chocolate lovers notes.

This Easy Chocolate Chip Banana Cake is moist, tender, and the perfect dessert to serve at any occasion. You could even make different versions like a loaf, muffins, or bundt.

Chocolate Chip Banana Cake Ingredients

One of the key reasons why I love making this cake is everything is made in one-bowl. Simply combine all the ingredients, pour the batter into a pan, and bake!

  • Unsalted butter – room temperature butter is the best!
  • Granulated sugar – needs to sweeten
  • Egg yolks – provide creaminess
  • Egg whites – to keep the cake fluffy
  • Banana – overripe bananas are the best part and key to making this cake shine!
  • Sour cream – adds a bit of silky-ness to the cake
  • All-purpose flour – you can use gluten free flour as well
  • Baking soda – help the cake rise
  • Vanilla extract – sweet flavor!
  • Ground nutmeg – adds a little kick to the cake
  • Kosher salt – balance flavor
  • Mini Chocolate Chips – lots because chocolate is the best way! Also, you could use dark or milk chocolate chips.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Banana Cake

This is a super simple cake recipe and takes 30 minutes tops to make! You can easily whip this up in the morning or make them the night before for an easy treat.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9-inch cake pan with nonstick cooking spray or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar. Next, add the egg yolks in one at a time until combined.
  3. Add in the mashed bananas, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Continue to mix until combined.
  4. In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg). Take the flour mixture and in thirds, add it to the butter mixture until well combined.
  5. In a separate bowl add the egg whites. Using an electric mixer whip the egg whites on low speed until stiff peaks form about 3 to 4 minutes.
  6. Take the egg whites and gently fold them into the cake batter followed by the chocolate chips. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool slightly before serving for best results.

How to Serve this Chocolate Chip Banana Cake

This delicious cake is best served warm or at room temperature. If you wanted to jazz it up even more you could spread a dollop of peanut butter on top or honey.

Also, this recipe is great for breakfast on the go, a quick snack cake, or even dessert. I enjoy packing a slice into Charlie’s lunchbox or handing her a slice after school. This cake is wonderful any time of day!

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do you Store the Cake?

Line an airtight container with paper towels and place the cooled cake slices on top in a single layer. Gently place paper towels above the cake to soak up extra moisture. Seal the container with the lid. Don’t store the cake in the refrigerator, it will dry them out. The muffins will keep on the counter for up to 3 days.

Can this Cake Be Frozen?

You bet! I keep a stash in our freezer. Store the cooled cake slices in a large freezer bag or freezer container. Freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to eat, remove from the freezer and reheat in the microwave for 30 seconds. You can also let them thaw at room temperature.
