Summer isn’t complete without a few grilled hot dogs.

Something about a juicy hot dog grilled to perfection and then loaded with ketchup, mustard and relish! What could be better?

Usually I’m on team hamburger, but I’ve made a few hot dog recipes that are two-snaps up: Easy Cobb Style Hot Dogs, Chorizo & Kimchi Hot Dogs, and Loaded Cheeseburger Hot Dogs.

BUT! If you are looking to mix things up this summer you need to try these Loaded Hot Dog Skewers. They are embarrassingly easy to make and you can use whatever you have in the pantry. Simple, delicious, and summer ready.

Which hot dog is the best for grilling?

Not all hot dogs are created equally. In fact, you have to take into account three different variables when choosing the correct hot dog. First, length. Will it fit appropriately into the hot dog bun. Second, the snap. When you bite into the hot dog it has to have the right amount of snap. Not enough snap and you feel like you’re eating cardboard. Too much snap and it falls apart. Third, size. You want a plump hot dog that is actually easy to eat with one bite.

What is the best quality hot dog you can buy?

Hebrew National Franks are the best quality not only from a price point but they also rate very high on the correct length, snap, and size.

How to Make Loaded Hot Dog Skewers

Hot dogs are go-to when you need a quick dinner. These skewers offer a fun twist on the classic hot dog & bun option. Check out the following steps to make these skewers:

  • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. While the grill is heating, soak your wooden skewers in water for about 10 minutes.
  • Next, slice the peppers into 1.5 inch slices. Slide the red onion in small wedges. Slice the hot dog into four 1.5 inch pieces. Take a skewer and thread two pepper slices followed by a hot dog piece followed by a red onion wedge and then a mushroom. Repeat the process until the skewer is full. You would have four skewers total.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine barbecue sauce, rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, and chili powder. Using a brush, brush the sauce all over the skewers. Grill the skewers for about 10 to 15 minutes turning frequently to ensure even cooking.
  • Remove from the grill and serve immediately with your favorite sides!

Variations for Loaded Hot Dog Skewers

One of the many reasons why I enjoy making hot dogs are the variations. Below are a few subtle ways to mix up these famous dogs:

  • BBQ Bacon Hot Dog Skewers: bacon slices, pineapple chunks, red onion, bbq sauce
  • Hawaiian Hot Dog Skewers: pineapple chunks, bell peppers, red onion, teriyaki glaze
  • Breakfast Hot Dog Skewers: sausage, cherry tomatoes, hash browns, maple syrup

Proper Storing

Here are some guidelines on how to store these skewers:

Refrigerate: Place the cooled skewers in an airtight container. If the skewers are large, you might need to separate the ingredients and store them in separate containers. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days

Reheat Skewers: Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place the skewers on a baking sheet and heat for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through. Grill: Reheat on the grill over medium heat for about 5-10 minutes, turning occasionally.Microwave: Place the skewers on a microwave-safe plate and heat on high for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through.
