Tres Leches French Toast with Cinnamon Whipped Cream
Cinco de Mayo is the perfect day to level up your breakfast game with this amazing Tres Leches French Toast. You know the famous tres leches cake – the one made with three kinds of milk? Well I turned this luscious dessert into a breakfast worth celebrating!
T-minus one week.
That’s right folks. We are exactly seven days away from one of my FAVORITE food holidays, Cinco de Mayo! Can I get a what-what?
I have a minor obsession with all things Mexican and culinary, from margaritas to sopapillas. You’d think I would have some kind of Hispanic blood running through my veins, but no, I am full on honky.
In the Grier household, we eat at least one Mexican-themed meal a week, possibly two. I keep telling myself I should buy stock in Chipotle because our Thursday nights usually consist of piled high chicken burrito bowls or some version of nachos.
So, what are you doing to celebrate this sassy, tequila-filled holiday? Do you go out? Have a fiesta at home? Since we are starting to show signs of old balls, Mr. B and I will probably stay at home, sip jalapeno margaritas, and whip up some spicy pork tacos.
We will, however, be starting the holiday with Tres Leches French Toast!
Making Tres Leches French Toast for Cinco de Mayo – or Anytime!
We’ve all heard of tres leches cake. It’s like an angel food cake and it’s made with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk — the “tres leches” or three milks.
I turned this dessert into breakfast and made a Mexican French toast. Using the traditional tres leches ingredients, I combined the three milks with eggs and vanilla. Then I dipped in some fluffy bread and let it sizzle in a hot pan with butter. The result? A rich, flavorful french toast recipe that’s just WAY better than the usual.
I top it off with dollops of cinnamon whipped cream and garnish with fresh fruit and cocoa powder. Then pour maple syrup on top.
Warm, crispy, gooey, and sweet. Could there be anything better?
Tres Leches French Toast
Ingredients
- 8 slices brioche bread
- 4 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
- 12 oz can evaporated milk
- 1 cup whole milk
- 6 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- fresh fruit, garnish
- cocoa powder, dusting
- maple syrup
For the whipped cream:
- 1 cup whipping cream
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, whole milk, and vanilla extract.
- Preheat a non-stick pan to medium-high heat and melt one tablespoon butter.
- Take a slice of bread and dip it into the milk/egg mixture. Place slice of bread onto the skillet followed by another slice of bread and cook on one side for about 3 minutes.
- Flip slices and cook for another 2 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan. Repeat process with remaining slices of bread.
For the whipped cream:
- In a bowl, combine cream and cinnamon. Whip until soft peaks form.
- Dollop the tres leches french toast slices with whipped cream and garnish with fresh fruit and cocoa powder. Pour syrup over top.
Ha, I think our posts started on the same wavelength today. Cheers to the best foodie holiday of the year!!

These photos are seriously stunning!!!!! I want to have a jalapeño marg with you!
Cinco de Mayo just happens to be a (totally unrelated) holiday here and you bet I’m going to be making this for breakfast.
One of my all time favorites!!!!
This looks amazing. So clever! We love mexican and mexican-ish food in our house too. We’ll likely stay in as well and eat a giant bowl of guacamole, because we just have to.
I have such a soft spot for French Toast (found around my mid-section). We’ve started making it with challah bread, which is divine. I’m also on a cinnamon kick, so this is right up my bowling alley. Love the photos; made me want to lick my computer screen. Also, “Full-on honky?” You crack me up, you big Jive Turkey. (:
This sounds delicious! love how you took this meal to a whole new level! The holidays must be fun at your house!
ummm could there be a better way to eat french toast? I think not! I loooove tres leche cakes, these french toast are totally my jam.
If Cinco de Mayo falls on a weekend, we go out, weekday, we stay in. This year I’m going ALL OUT with everything from guac to enchiladas to homemade margs and churros. Olay!! Besides churros, Tres Leches cake is my FAVORITE Mexican dessert — turning it into French toast is making me drool.
Nicole, I’m coming over to celebrate with you! I’ll bring french toast? 🙂
Ah french toast stacks…you are brunch perfection! Love that prep shot. So pretty!
Oh man. I could use a big stack of these. Tres leeches is one of my favorite desserts ever! The fact that I can turn it into breakfast now is blowing my mind.
So creative! Love it Lauren!
Girl you are a genious!
This is beyond amazing! We don’t make French toast enough in this household, but we do consume a LOT of Chipotle.
I could really use a pile of this French toast on my breakfast plate. It looks amazing. Yes, Mexican food is the best.
You can get a WUT WUT over these toasts, too!! For serious son, these rock my socks off!
Yes to all of it. Burrito bowls, tres leches french toast and sipping margaritas in your pi’s. The only thing I’m second guessing is “old balls” but that’s probably because I have the mind of a 12 year old boy….
Wow! The only thing better than tres leches cake for dessert is tres leches for brekkie!! Love it!
OOOOF! Parlez-vous French toast?! This stack is so high, mighty, and tasty looking, lady!! I’m pretty excited for Cinco de Mayo, too…but for now, I’m going ape-y all over this stack o’ toasties 😀
This is my birthday cake of choice, so you know I love it in breakfast form!
So decadent and delicious!
