Easy Carbonara Pizza with Burrata

Pizza-style carbonara? Sign me up!

This classic Italian pasta is getting a doughy makeover! While I love a plate of creamy and cheesy carbonara pasta, there is something so special about using its elements in making this pizza variation. The cheese-crusted dough topped with bits of crispy bacon, dollops of fresh burrata, and the gooey egg is just amazing. The runny egg makes a delightful mess as you cut through it. The creamy yolk spills all over just waiting for it to be scooped and enjoyed.

Pizza Pasta for Breakfast

We are a family of homemade pizza lovers! I just love making my own versions at home, like my Green Goddess Chicken Pizza, Pepperoni Pizza Pot Pie, and Slow Cooker Meat Lovers Pizza. And guess who are not passing up the opportunity to have a few slices in the morning? And we are not talking about reheated leftovers from the night before, but a  freshly baked, homemade pizza topped with bacon and egg! And a sprinkling of garlic chili oil all over is guaranteed to wake your senses, especially your taste buds, up!

What You’ll Need

I love making pizza at home because I get to decide what to add and how loaded I want them to be! This recipe uses common brekkie treats and three kinds of cheese. If you like the sound of that, wait until you get a bite!

  • Pizza dough- I always stock up on store-bought pizza dough because they are super convenient when I need to make pizza any time of the day. However, you can always use homemade crust if you prefer.
  • Bacon- cut into ½-inch pieces. Fried to crunchy perfection, these savory bits are the perfect topping for a cheesy pizza like this. You can use ham or pancetta as substitutes.
  • Cheeses- I used mozzarella and parmesan to cover the pizza crust and distributed dollops of burrata all over. The result is an indulgently rich and cheesy pizza to die for!
  • Egg- yes, an egg on this pizza is a must just like how a classic carbonara has eggs on its sauce. If done right, you will have a runny center that mixes with the cheesy crust that is just so, so good!
  • Salt and pepper-  to taste

For the Chili Oil- you can make it from scratch or use ready-made too.

  • Red pepper flakes
  • Garlic
  • Olive oil

Possible Add-ons

The beauty of homemade pizza is that you can build it yourself! As great as this recipe is as it is, nothing is stopping you from adding a bunch of toppings you like. Here are some ideas:

  • Mushrooms- this will add a great meaty texture to your pizza.
  • Greens- you can add arugula or spinach for color and flavor.
  • Olives- add pops of briny and earthy flavor.

How to Make Carbonara Pizza with Burrata

Homemade pizzas are super easy to make, especially when you use ready-made dough. Just pile them up with your choice of toppings, bake and serve! It will only take you about 20 minutes to get this on the table.

Preparations:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  • Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray or place a piece of parchment.

Steps:

  1. Make the chili oil. In a medium mixing bowl combine the garlic and red pepper flakes. Next, add the olive oil to a small saucepan over medium heat. Heat the olive oil until slightly smoky and then pour it over the red pepper flakes. Stir to combine and set aside.
  2. Cook the bacon. In a medium skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Using a slotted spoon, place the bacon on a plate lined with a paper towel.
  3. Assemble. Stretch the pizza dough into a 10-inch or 11-inch round and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Top the pizza dough with mozzarella and parmesan cheese. Make sure to avoid the center of the pizza because the egg will be placed there later. Also, leave a 1-inch border for the crust. Top the cheese with the crispy bacon.
  4. Pre-Bake. Place the pizza in the oven for about 7 to 9 minutes.
  5. Add the egg and burrata. Remove the pizza from the oven and crack the egg into the center. Next, dollop some of the burrata on the pizza.
  6. Bake and serve. place back in the oven for about 3 to 4 minutes or until the egg white has set. Remove the pizza from the oven and drizzle the top with the chili oil. Serve and enjoy!

Useful Hints for Easy Carbonara Pizza with Burrata

  • Remove the pizza dough from the freezer 30 minutes before to bring it to room temperature. I find that it is a lot easier to stretch it this way.
  • If you want to have a creamy carbonara-style pizza, break the runny yolk and drizzle it all over before serving. Yum!
  • If you are in a hurry, you can skip making the chili oil and just sprinkle chili flakes later on.
  • Let your pizza cool down for a bit before serving. Make sure that you transfer it to a wire cooling rack to prevent moisture in the crust.
  • It can be tempting to load your pizza with as much topping as you want. However, this can result in the crust not baking properly or getting soggy. So, go easy on the toppings!

Storing Notes

If you have leftovers, wrap them in foil or plastic and place them in a covered container. They can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. Warm them up in the oven instead of a microwave to get the best results.
